Her drawings might be familiar but odds are the name is new–Maira Kalman has been entertaining us with her whimsical illustrations for years while working with such venerable partners such as the New Yorker, Kate Spade, and the New York Times.

Kalman was recently was named as a finalist for a National Design Award (2010) for “Communication Design.”  Her contributions to the field of design are as varied as they are plentiful–she has created products for the Museum of Modern Art in New York, fabric for the fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi and illustrated twelve children’s books and an edition of E.B. White’s classic book Elements of Style.

Whoa! This woman never rests.

Her latest adventure is a book based on her New York Times columns about American Democracy entitled And the Pursuit of Happiness which will be published in the fall.
